Party Like It's the End of the World: Wasteland Weekend 2018
It's August, which means that around here, it's countdown time for one of my favorite things—Wasteland Weekend. I'm taking a break from prepping for this week-long, desert camping festival to chat a little bit about it.
So, what is Wasteland Weekend?
I'm so glad you (might have) asked! Officially build as the world's largest post-apocalyptic festival, Wasteland Weekend descends on a desolate area of the Mojave desert outside of California City every year in September. It's a 5-day long celebration of the end of the world (and showers.).
The community has organized incredible events, such as:
- A full-blown apocalypse carnival
- Bombed-out burlesque shows
- A movie theatre showing the best of the worst of the pre-apocalype
- Multiple games of a blood sport called Jugger
- A daily newspaper, radio station, and event-wide mail system
My personal favorites are the Jugger matches, though I might be a bit biased. After all, I am their loud-mouth commentator.
You'll find an incredible amount of dystopian and post-apocalyptic pop culture references there, from the Mad Max series to Fallout, A Boy and His Dog, Blood of Heroes, Six-String Samurai, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and more. If you're even a passing fan of the apocalypse, Wasteland Weekend is the place to be.
Tickets for Wasteland Weekend are still available. Wasteland Weekend 2018 is happening September 26-30.
